If Islam is religion of Peace, Why Jihad?

It is true that jihad is one of the most important teachings of Islam. But jihad is not synonymous with war. In Islam another word is used for war and fighting. This word is ‘qital.’ When the Qur’an refers to war or fighting, it uses the word qital and not jihad.
Jihad literally means to strive or to struggle. So jihad actually means peaceful struggle, especially for Da’wah work. The Qur’an says: Do great jihad with the help of the Qur’an. (25:52)
The Qur’an is simply a book, and not a sword, “so do great jihad with the Qur’an” means ‘do great jihad with the ideological power of the Qur’an. In fact, jihad is only another name for peaceful activism. And peaceful activism is the only weapon by which Islam wants to achieve all its aims and objectives. The Qur’an has this to say of the mission of the Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him: We have not sent you forth but as a mercy to mankind. (21:107)
In the Qur’an and the Hadith, there are many such references which go to prove that Islam is a religion of peace, love and human brotherhood. However, it is also a fact that in later times the image of Islam has altered drastically. Now Islam has come to be regarded as a religion of violence rather than as a religion of peace. This transformation in the image of Islam has not simply been produced by the media. The responsibility for this falls on latter-day Muslims, who have failed to maintain the original image of Islam.
In actual fact, the mission of all the prophets right from Adam to Christ was one and the same—of establishing the ideology of monotheism in the world, so that man might worship one God alone. As we know, there came a large number of prophets in ancient times, but the message of monotheism remained at the initial stage; it could not culminate in revolution. This state continued up till the time of Christ, the last but one Prophet. The reason being that in ancient times, the system of monarchy was entrenched throughout the world. The kings, in order to secure their political interests, adopted the course of religious persecution. These kings suppressed all religious movements, which were different from the state religion. They would nip all apostasy in the bud, since they saw religion as a matter of affirming one’s loyalty to the state. If a person adhered to a religion other than the state religion, he was regarded as a rebel.
That is why in ancient times prophetic movements could go no further ahead than the stage of Da’wah. No sooner would a movement based on monotheism arise than the coercive political system would be activated to pull it out by its roots. The reason for the absence of any historical record of prophets (besides the Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him) in antiquity is traceable to the intense opposition of these coercive political systems. All the Prophets of ancient times, historically speaking, were like mythical beings, rather than real human beings accepted as historical figures. The Prophet Jesus was the last link in the chain of these persecutions faced by the preachers of monotheism. Then God decreed the abolition of this coercive political system, even if it entailed the use of force in order that the age of religious persecution might be brought to an end forever, and replaced by the age of religious freedom. This divine plan was brought to completion through the Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him, and his companions. This is the command given in the Qur’an:
“Fight them until there be no persecution and religion be wholly God’s” (8:39).
Therefore the Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him, received special divine succour in the form of a powerful team consisting of one hundred thousand individuals. Equipped with this team the Prophet waged war to end this coercive system of religious persecution, and it was in Arabia that it was first of all overthrown. Then within a very short span of time, they advanced to abolish the coercive system established by the Sassanid and Byzantine empires. In the wake of this Islamic action, the coercive system was abolished forever in the major part of the inhabited world of the time. This war waged by the Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him, and his companions was not a war as is commonly understood, but rather a divine operation, which was carried out by a people who possessed a high standard of moral character.
However, this operation was certainly only temporary in nature. Its goal was to put an end to the age of religious persecution and usher in the age of religious freedom. This end was fully achieved during the early period of Islam, the age of the pious Caliphs. Afterwards the time came to keep the sword in its sheath and engage in Da’wah work, that is, the call to God, which was the real and permanent goal of Islam. According to the explicit command of the Qur’an, the call to God is the true and eternal mission of Islam, whereas war is only temporary and allowed only in exceptional cases.
Here it would be pertinent to refer to a great companion of the Prophet. After the period of the pious Caliphate, a group of Muslims once again engaged in war. At that time some senior Companions were present in Makkah and Madinah. But they did not join these wars, one prominent name being that of Abdullah ibn Umar ibn Khattab. He did not approve of these wars, therefore he remained away from them. Some of those involved in these wars came to him and said: God has commanded us in the Qur’an to fight against Fitna (persecution). Then why do you not join with us in these wars? Abdullah ibn Umar replied that “the command of the Qur’an to fight against Fitna is not what you hold to be Fitna. Fitna meant religious persecution and we have already fought and put an end to this Fitna (qad fa‘alna). Therefore now after the removal of this obstacle, we have to engage ourselves in peaceful Da’wah work, rather than initiating hostilities and creating new Fitna once again, which is akin to creating new obstacles for peaceful Islamic Da’wah (al-Bukhari, Sahih, Kitab at-Tafsir, under al-Baqarah and al-Anfal).

Abdullah ibn Umar had made an extremely pertinent point at the most appropriate time, but this point of view was not forcefully taken up by others. Afterwards when the Islamic sciences were developed, this important point made by Abdullah ibn Umar could not be highlighted, with the result that history took the course of wars and conquests, while in terms of the real teachings of Islam, history should have taken the course of Da’wah and the propagation of Islam.

Ghazwa e Hind - Holy war for India

There are Ahadith which are being used by extremist groups propagating a war against India. All these ahadith refer to troops going from Palestine and Syria and returning to those regions. Even if these ahadith were authentic, and they are indeed found in reliable books, even though I haven't investigated the respective authenticity of them, they have nothing to do with any possibility of an Indo-Pak war.

The other important thing to note is that Abu Huraira, the companion-narrator is suggesting that it was something that was about to happen during his lifetime. It is quite likely that Muhammad Bin Qasim's conquest of Sind was being prophesied in these ahadith. There used to be kings in India then; there aren't any kings there anymore.

The third important matter to note is that a message as important as the one mentioned in these narratives is described in all different versions of it through only one companion. Clearly, if the message was important, there should have been several narrators mentioning it.

This message therefore cannot be employed as an excuse to fight against India. We can fight against India or any other nation only if conditions of Jihad are satisfied, which are: it should be declared by a Muslim ruler, Muslims should be at least half as militarily strong as their enemies, and the enemy should be guilty of blatant injustice against a group of people. Any individual or group of people cannot declare Jihad privately on their own against anyone; if they do, they will be guilty of creating fasaad fil 'ard (mischief on earth).

Imam Mehdi: Not mentioned in Quran - Analysis

Mehdi's Arrival: Is it an essential belief?  Will he be an Imam?

The first thing be clear is that the arrival of 'Imam Mehdi' is a piece of information, which has been given to us through some compilations of hadith, claimed to have been shared with a select few by Prophet Muhammad (sws). This does not constitute belief, for belief essentially means the Qur'an: the Message that was transmitted to all people around Prophet Muhammad (sws) as the binding word of God, forming a necessary part of our understanding of Islam - rejecting any part of which would place us outside the fold of Islam.

Informations contained in ahadith, which can be debated over by scholars as to their authenticity and reliability, do not and cannot form a part of our belief system. Belief entails absolute certainty, and does not presume doubts about what is acceptable and what isn't.

I will, therefore, comment on 'Imam Mehdi' and the proposed arrival as religious information, and not as a component of belief; even more so because there is not a single mention of the arrival of an 'Imam Mehdi' in the Qur'an. I believe that the Qur'an being the fully preserved, last book from the Almighty, would've ensured a reference to such an incident, if at all Muslims needed to be guided about such a future event.

From an academic point of view too, 'Imam Mehdi' has not even been mentioned in any of the authentic, sahih ahadith. There is a very strong argument that all ahadith that do mention such a coming, do not pass as 'sahih' (not befitting the criteria of reliability, as set by the doctors of hadith) in the first place.

The arrival of 'Imam Mehdi', seems to me, to come from the Shia school of thought, amongst the Muslims. The Shia mainly differs with the Sunni, in that he believes that the God Almighty Himself appointed twelve Imams after Prophet Muhammad (sws), in order that they may guide Muslims in worldly and spiritual matters. The first of these Imams is believed to be Ali (ra), then his sons, Hassan and Hussain (ra), followed by the progeny of Ali and Fatima (ra). The twelfth Imam in this chain is supposed to have disappeared, following which, contact was established with him, indicating that, he re-appeared in a sense. He is believed to have disappeared again, inspiring a wait for his second re-appearance. This second period of his disappearance has continued till now. It is believed by the Shias that the day he returns will be the day marking the revival of the Muslim Ummah, returning to it, its lost glory. This is briefly how the Shia Muslim understands the coming/return of 'Imam Mehdi'.

The Sunni Muslim does not believe in the twelver Imamate of the Shias. They believe that Mehdi will be an Imam in his own right, and would be an Imam in the sense of a leader - one who will lead the Ummah against the enemies of Islam, and succeed in this endeavour, once again, towards the same end - that is, glory of the Muslims.

The problem with either understanding is that it promotes slackness and lack of incentive to act and make a difference, especially in times of subjugation by the powers that be. As a result, one fails to accept the blame for the woes of the Ummah, a decline, if there is, is attributed to fate as opposed to our own unwillingness to progress. This is a highly unacceptable and ineffective way of approaching our problems. Indeed, according to the Qur'an and Ahadith, this worldly life is a trial, and if we do not strive to act as per the teachings of Islam, we will suffer in this world - the Ummah will keep getting weaker, falling deeper into its subjugation by non-Muslims.

Awaiting 'Imam Mehdi' essentially means that our focus shifts away from searching within ourselves for reasons of our degeneration, towards pinning hopes on an individual to miraculously come to our rescue. The moment one stops self-evaluation is the moment one stops recognising problems and looking for solutions. The sense of urgency to reform and to improve is sourly missing. Unfortunately, that seems to be an established pattern with the Ummah today, only helping aggravate our situation. What else can one expect, when refuge is sought in the coming of one individual, as opposed to the Qur'an!

To summarize:

i) The idea of an 'Imam Mehdi' is itself just religious information, at best, and not belief, having no bases in the Qur'an;
ii) The information itself comes from reports rejected by the doctors of hadith as unauthentic;
iii) As a result of pinning our hopes on the coming of an 'Imam', the condition of the Ummah is constantly in decline, and despite, Muslims seem unwilling to act.

Mehdi means "guided one" many people claimed to be Mehdi which later proved to be false. This is being used by terrorists and militants to justify their heinous crimes against humanity. So be WARNED !!!!

Brief Description of Names of God & His Titles in Bible:
Monotheism has been clearly emphasized in Bible, the verse from the book of Deuteronomy contains an exhortation from Moses (peace be upon him):”Shama Israelu Adonai Ila Hayno Adna Ikhad“. It is a Hebrew quotation which means: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord”(Deuteronomy;6:4, Isaiah;43:11, 45:5,46:9). Jesus (peace be upon him) also said: “Shama Israelu Adonai Ila Hayno Adna Ikhad ”[“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord”](Mark;12:29), “..There is none good but one, that is, God..”(Mathew;19:17).  Qur’an says: “Your God is one God; there is no one worthy of worship except Him, the Compassionate, the Merciful.” (Qur’an;2:163). The monotheism in Islam is called Tawhid in Arabic; Allah, the One and Only God. Allah says:, “Say: He is Allah the One and Only; God the Eternal, the Uncaused Cause of All Being ; He begets not, and neither is He begotten; And there is nothing that can be  compared with Him.”(Qur’an;112:1-4). Attributes of Allah has been mentioned at many places in Qur’an some references are Qur’an; 2:255, 59:22-24, 42:11-12, 11:6, 6:59, 31:34, 4:164, 7:143, 31:27, 6:115, 4:87, 2:133). Similarly according to Bible, God says: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:” “Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God.”(Exodus; 3:15, 20:3-5, Deuteronomy 5:7-9, 1Timothy;2:5). God has been addressed with different names in Bible, the most prominent one are mentioned below:
  • “ELOHIM” (or Elohay) is the first name for God found in the Bible, and it’s used throughout the Old Testament over 2,300 times. Elohim comes from the Hebrew root meaning “strength” or “power”, and has the unusual characteristic of being plural in form. In Genesis 1:1, we read, “In the beginning Elohim created the heaven and the earth.” Right from the start, this plural form for the name of God is used to describe the One God, a mystery that is uncovered throughout the rest of the Bible. Throughout scripture, Elohim is combined with other words to describe certain characteristics of God. Some examples: Elohay Kedem – God of the Beginning: (Deuteronomy 33:27). Elohay Mishpat – God of Justice: (Isaiah 30:18). Elohay Selichot – God of Forgiveness: (Nehemiah 9:17). Elohay Marom – God of Heights: (Micah 6:6). Elohay Mikarov – God Who Is Near: (Jeremiah 23:23). Elohay Mauzi – God of My Strength: (Psalm 43:2).Elohay Tehilati – God of My Praise: (Psalm 109:1). Elohay Yishi – God Of My Salvation: (Psalm 18:47, 25:5). Elohim Kedoshim – Holy God: (Leviticus 19:2, Joshua 24:19). Elohim Chaiyim – Living God: (Jeremiah 10:10). Elohay Elohim – God of Gods: (Deuteronomy;10:17).
  • “EL” is another name used for God in the Bible, showing up about 200 times in the Old Testament. El is the simple form arising from Elohim, and is often combined with other words for descriptive emphasis. Some examples: El HaNe’eman – The Faithful God: (Deuteronomy 7:9). El HaGadol – The Great God: (Deuteronomy 10:17). El HaKadosh – The Holy God: (Isaiah 5:16). El Yisrael – The God Of Israel: (Psalm 68:35). El HaShamayim – The God Of The Heavens: (Psalm 136:26). El De’ot – The God Of Knowledge: (1 Samuel 2:3). El Emet – The God Of Truth: (Psalm 31:6). El Yeshuati – The God Of My Salvation: (Isaiah 12:2). El Elyon – The Most High God: (Genesis 14:18). Immanu El – God Is With Us: (Isaiah 7:14). El Olam – The God Of Eternity (Genesis 21:33). El Echad – The One God: (Malachi 2:10).  “Have we not all one father? Has not one God created us?” [Malachi;2:10]
  • “ELAH” is another name for God, used about 70 times in the Old Testament. It is very similar to Arabic “Allah” or ‘Eelah’.  Elahh [hla]‘ (Aramaic; el-aw’): corresponding to God. In Hebrew [hwla] ‘elowahh el-o’-ah; probably prolonged (emphat.) from [la]‘el ale; a deity or the Deity:–God, god. Again, when combined with other words, we see different attributes of God. Some examples: Elah Yerush’lem – God of Jerusalem: (Ezra;7:19), Elah Yisrael – God of Israel: (Ezra;5:1), Elah Sh’maya – God of Heaven:(Ezra 7:23). Elah Sh’maya V’Arah – God of Heaven and Earth: (Ezra;5:11).
  • “YHVH” is the Hebrew word that translates as “LORD”. Found more often in the Old Testament than any other name for God (approximately 7,000 times), the title is also referred to as the “Tetragrammaton” meaning the “The Four Letters”. YHVH comes from the Hebrew verb “to be” and is the special name that God revealed to Moses at the burning bush. “And God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM; and He said, thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, I AM has sent me to you… this is My eternal name, and this is how I am to be recalled for all generations’” (Exodus;3:14-15). Therefore, YHVH declares God’s absolute being – the source of everything, without beginning and without end. Although some pronounce YHVH as “Jehovah” or “Yaweh,” scholars really don’t know the proper pronunciation. The Jews stopped pronouncing this name by about 200 A.D., out of fear of breaking the commandment “You shall not take the name of YHVH your God in vain” (Exodus;20:7). (Today’s rabbis typically use “Adonai” in place of YHVH.) Here are some examples of YHVH used in scripture: YHVH Elohim – LORD God: (Genesis;2:4). YHVH M’kadesh – The LORD Who Makes Holy: (Ezekiel;37:28). YHVH Yireh – The LORD Who Sees/provides: (Genesis;22:14). YHVH Nissi – The LORD My Banner: (Exodus;17:15). YHVH Shalom – The LORD of Peace: (Judges;6:24). YHVH Tzidkaynu – The LORD Our Righteousness: (Jeremiah;33:16). YHVH O’saynu – The LORD our Maker:(Psalm;95:6).
Since the Christians initially had the Old Testament scriptures as their ‘Bible’ and frequently quoted from it in the New Testament, some of the names for God carry over into the New. Most frequently simply the term God is used. Jesus in referring to God calls Him Father [metaphorically, being the Creator and Sustainer, not biologically]. The New Testament in completion of the Old adds the revelation of Jesus Christ as being a name for God, as one of the divine persons in the trinity. The Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost is considered to be fully equal as such being part of the three persons.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was human being

Was the Prophet (sallallahu alaihe wasallam) noor (light) or bashar (a human being)? Did he have a shadow?

Our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is the leader of all the sons of Adam, and he is a human being, one of the sons of Adam. He was born from two parents, he ate food and married woman, he got hungry and fell sick, and he felt joy and sorrow. One of the clearest signs of his humanity is that Allah caused him to die as He causes all souls to die, but what distinguishes the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) from others is Prophethood and Revelation.
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): ’Say (O Muhammad): I am only a man like you. It has been revealed to me that your Ilaah (God) is One Ilaah (God i.e. Allaah)“ [al-Kahf 18:110]
The state of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in his humanity is the same as that of all the Prophets and Messengers. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
’And We did not create them (the Messengers, with) bodies that ate not food, nor were they immortals“ [al-Anbiya‘ 21:8]
Allaah condemned those who wondered at the humanity of the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), as He says (interpretation of the meaning):  ’And they say: Why does this Messenger (Muhammad) eat food, and walk about in the markets (as we)—?“ [al-Furqaan 25:8]
It is not permissible to overstep the mark with regard to what the Qur‘aan states about the message and humanity of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). For example, it is not permissible to describe him (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) as being noor (light) or as casting no shadow, or to say that he was created from light. Rather this is a kind of exaggeration which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade when he said: ’Do not exaggerate about me as was exaggerated about …Eesa ibn Maryam. Say: the slave of Allaah and His Messenger.“ Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6830.
Moreover it is proven that the angels are the ones who were created from light, not any of the sons of Adam. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ’The angels were created from light, and Iblees was created from smokeless fire, and Adam (peace be upon him) was created from what has been described to you.“ Narrated by Muslim, 2996.
Shaykh al-Albaani (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah (458):
This indicates that the well known hadeeth that is in circulation among people – ’The first thing that Allaah created was the light of your Prophet, O Jaabir“ – is false, and so are other similar ahaadeeth which say that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was created from light. This hadeeth clearly indicates that the angels are the only ones who are created from light, not Adam and his sons, so pay heed and do not be negligent. End quote.
The Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas was asked the following question:
Here in Pakistan the scholars of the Bareilwi sect believe that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaa be upon him) cast no shadow, which indicates that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaa be upon him) was not human. Is this hadeeth saheeh which says that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had no shadow?
They replied:
This view is false and goes against the texts of the Qur‘aan and the saheeh Sunnah which indicate that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was human and did not differ in his human make-up from other people. He had a shadow like any other human. The Prophethood with which Allaah honoured him did not alter the fact that he was human as Allaah created him, with a father and mother. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
’Say (O Muhammad): I am only a man like you. It has been revealed to me that your Ilaah (God) is One Ilaah (God  i.e. Allaah)“ [al-Kahf 18:110]
’Their Messengers said to them: We are no more than human beings like you“ [Ibraaheem 14:11]
With regard to the report that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was created from the light of Allaah, this is a fabricated hadeeth. End quote. Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa‘imah, 1/464
Islam Q&A

.................................................................................................

Q: In Pakistan, scholars of the Bareilwi Sufi order believe that the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not have a shadow like ordinary human beings, which indicates that he was not of human form. Is there any Sahih Hadith (a Hadith that has been transmitted by people known for their uprightness and exactitude; free from eccentricity and blemish) to the effect that the Prophet did not have a shadow?

A: This is a false belief and incongruous with the explicit texts of the Qur'an and Sunnah (whatever is reported from the Prophet) which affirm the human nature of the Prophet (peace be upon him) who shared the same human characteristics as the rest of mankind.

He used to have a shadow just like any ordinary human being. Being honored with Prophethood does not take him out of the fold of mankind who are born through the natural contact between a father and a mother.

Allah (Exalted be He) says: "Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): "I am only a man like you. It has been revealed to me." [Surah Al-Kahf, 18: 110]

Allah (Exalted be He) also says: "Their Messengers said to them: ’We are no more than human beings like you" [Surah Ibrahim, 14: 11]

As for the Hadith which states that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was created from the light of Allah, it has been classified as Hadith Mawdu` (fabricated Hadith).

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions!

Say (O Muhammad): "I am no more than a human being like you; one to whom revelation is made: 'Your Lord is the One and Only God.' Hence, whoever looks forward to meet his Lord, let him do righteous works, and let him associate none with the worship of his Lord." (18:110)
